Updates and Voices of Change

1/23/2011

It's a good sign to have your music performed at more venues than you could possibly attend, especially simultaneously!  I heard a great performance of my Capriccio for piano four hands  at TCU last night.  Thank you Zachary Stoughton and Sara Doan -- bravo, guys!

Concurrent with that concert was a performance of my cello piece, the Paul Bunyan Suite, down in Georgetown, TX at Southwestern University.  Though I couldn't be there, the report is that the concert was a success, and that the audience laughed at the right parts.  Phew.  Many thanks to Jesus Castro-Balbi and Gloria Lin for making that happen!

Finally, I'm excited to be attending the Voices of Change concert in Dallas tonight.  Special thanks to Eileen McKee, General Manager, for hooking me up with some free tickets, as well as to Francis Osentowski for reaching out to me to get more involved with VoC.  More to come...

Marimba Solo gets a new name

Ok, so I think the marimba piece is finally named.  Darrin Hicks and I tossed around some possible titles, let a few of them marinate in our mind grapes for a couple weeks, and finally we landed on...

Drumroll please...

Shattered Dreamscapes

The "dreamscapes" part comes from the fact that there are shifting, dream-like musical images that emerge across the span of the piece, while the "shattered" part is due to the frequently changing meters that interrrupt the smooth progression of lines.  Interestingly enough, both Darrin and I independently thought it was like looking at an image through broken glass ("Through the Broken Looking Glass" was one possible title, but we decided it was too Alice in Wonderland), so this title seemed to fit well.

Also, massive props to Darrin for helping me out big time in making this a workable piece for marimba, and not just a bunch of notes that my computer plays real purty.  The process continues, and I'm extremely grateful for the help.  This is going to pay huge dividends as I write my percussion orchestra piece for the TCU ensemble.
